List Selector: IE6 vs IE8

Tried the SuperPreview of Expression Web 4, IE8 renders pretty much same as every other current browser, but IE6 is a special beast. How can you be “browser-independent” when you rely on CSS?

    <style type="text/css">         .horizontal         {             list-style: none;             margin: 10px;             float: left;         }         .sub-level         {             background:gray;          }     </style>
        $(document).ready(             function () {                 $('#selected-plays >li').addClass('horizontal');                 $('#selected-plays li:not(.horizontal)').addClass('sub-level');                 $('#selected-plays ul:not(.horizontal)').addClass('sub-level');             });
